Recommended Software

Technology moves so fast these days that sometimes it can be difficult to know if you are using the best software for the tasks that you are performing on your computer. This page contains a brief run-down of the software that we recommend and use ourselves to ensure that we are getting the most from our computers.

Web Browser

We recommend you considering Mozilla Firefox for all of your web surfing needs, should you not like the more ‘universal’ Internet Explorer from Microsoft, it is also updated much more frequently and claimed to be safer where security is concerned.

We understand that making the move to a new piece of software can be daunting so here are a few of the key differences that you will find if you have only ever used Internet Explorer…

  • Favourites are now called Bookmarks, they can be found by clicking the ‘Firefox’ button at the top of the browser, or if your layout doesn’t include this button then they can be found in the ‘Bookmarks’  menu at the top of the window.
  • Searches can be performed by typing words into the address bar (called the awesome bar in firefox). As you type words you will be presented with suggestions from your bookmarks and search history beneath the bar, we find this to be a much faster way of finding your way around, especially when you have a large number of bookmarks saved.
  • Instead of opening new windows all of the time, firefox uses a feature called ‘tabbed browsing’. This means that newly opened pages will appear as a tab across the top of the window for ease of access.

You can simplify the install process by using our Browser Upgrade Package, this will also install all of the plugins required for viewing today’s most popular websites.

Email Client

Mozilla Thunderbird is an alternative to Microsoft Mail, Outlook or Outlook Express and is our email client of choice, it is built by the same people as Mozilla Firefox and features the same levels of security and speed.

If you have previously used Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail then you will have no problems in finding your way around the program.

You will also find that configuring your W3Z email accounts is a breeze with this software as we have automated the process to the point of you only needing to enter your name, email address and password, the software will find the correct settings for everything from there-on in. Visit our Email page to find out how to set it up.

If you are used to a different email client then you may find this page useful to tweak the settings to something more familiar and get you comfortable with using Thunderbird every day.

Our antivirus of choice is Microsoft Security Essentials as we find it to be fast, hassle free, reliable and easy to use. The software (along with all software on this page) is free and has no subscription charges.

Please be aware that running more than one antivirus program on a single computer will cause problems, make sure to uninstall your old one before installing this one. Tools/advice for doing so can be found on this page.
