ICE AGE 2 makers hope for a warm reception
A Derby firm is hoping for a global hit thanks to its computer game based on a Hollywood blockbuster.
Eurocom, of Ashbourne Road, Derby, has designed the new game to tie in with the animation Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, sequel to 2002's £217m-grossing Ice Age. The game took nine months to develop.
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown gets its British release on Friday and the computer game was released last week. In the action adventure game you have to steer Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger through a series of challenges as a melting glacier floods their valley. Eurocom's development director Mat Sneap, of Ashboune, said he was very proud of the game. He said "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown is a massive Hollywood blockbuster.
"As a Derbyshire lad myself I am very proud that it is in our city that the computer game has been made. It just goes to show that there is as much talent here as there is in sunny Los Angeles.".
Eurocom was founded in October 1988 by Derbyshire father and son team Ian and Mat Sneap along with Tim Rogers, Neil Baldwin, and Hugh Binns.
The firm's first game, Magician, was published in 1990 for the 8-bit NES console.
Now in their 18th year, they employ a team of 220 people who work on multiple projects across Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and PC platforms.
Dani Martinelli, deputy manager of Game, a computer games shop in St Peter's Street, Derby, said: "We expect the game to be a big success.
"When kids see the film they then want to continue the adventure at home and often rush to buy the game."
Mrs Martinelli said it was nice to see a game in their store that was designed locally: "Often we get games from America and Japan but this makes a nice change. I know someone who works for the company so it makes it more personal to sell a game that is made by people from Derby and then obviously sold in the city."
Mr Binns, Eurocom director, said: "This region has a particularly good reputation for companies that make computer games. We would like to carry this on and are always looking for local talent to join us here at Eurocom."
Company has gone global.
Since Eurocom was launched it has become one of the world's major games companies. Among its biggest selling titles are Crash Bandicoot and Spyro series of games. The firm has also created many movie and TV tie-in titles including games based on James Bond, Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Tarzan.
