VPN
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network.
A VPN connection is a secure connection
that uses the Internet to transfer information between
computers. To create a virtual private network connection,
you'll need to follow the instructions on your computer
and select the option most appropriate to "Connect
to a private network through the Internet". You
cannot use "Dial Up Private Network" option
as the W3Z service is not a dial up (telephone based)
service, so you should find the option you need in the
Network Services area of your operating system.
For a VPN to work properly, both your
computer and the computer you wish to connect to (usually
a work computer or a friends') must have a fixed IP
address. This effectively sets up a secure "tunnel"
through the Internet between the two computers.
A fixed IP (Internet Protocol) address
allows the two computers to find each other once they
have connected to the Internet, once they have found
each other using the fixed IP addresses, they then authenticate
by exchanging a username and password.
You can purchase a fixed IP address which
will allow you to set up a VPN from W3Z for £4.70
incl VAT a month each.
